La storia di Valkyria Chronicles si svolge nell'anno 1935 E.C. Il continente Europa è dilaniato dalla Seconda Guerra Europea fra l'Alleanza Imperiale Autocratica Est-Europea (conosciuta come l'Impero) e la Federazione Atlantica. Al centro del conflitto il possesso della preziosissima risorsa Ragnite. L'Impero infuria nel continente come un incendio fuori controllo, determinato a mettere le mani sui ricchi depositi di Ragnite del Principato di Gallia. Sebbene la pacifica Gallia sia totalmente neutrale al conflitto, i suoi cittadini dovranno difendersi dall'inevitabile invasione. I giocatori seguiranno il tenente Welkin Gunther e il glorioso Squadrone 7 della Milizia Gallica nell'azione di resistenza all'apparentemente inarrestabile esercito imperiale.
